Maintenance/care

What to look out for when maintaining your Humbaur

The following details refer to average trailer use with a maximum use of 10,000 km driven per annum:

After the first 50 km

Check the tyre pressure and inflate to the recommended value.
Check the wheel nuts for tightness and tighten if necessary.

Every 500 km or 1x per month

Check the wheel nuts for tightness and tighten if necessary.

Every 2000 km or 1x per month

Check the tyre pressure and inflate to the recommended value. Check the working of the entire braking system and the handbrake. Inspect the lighting system, reflectors and signs for damage, completeness and functionality. The individual components are plugs, cables, rear lights, front, side and rear reflectors, the registration plate and the registration plate lighting. Replace defective bulbs and illegible signs (e.g. warning stickers).

Every 5000 km or six months

Tyre wear, wheels
Check the ageing condition of the tyres (e.g. cracks, porous spots) and measure the tread depth in the middle of the tyres. Inspect the rims for visible damage (concentricity, wobble) and swap or repair the wheels as axle sets or in pairs.

Coupling ball, overrun hitch
Check for visible damage and inspect the components for correct function and wear. Oil and lubricate the overrun hitch. Replace a defective gaiter or fasten it if it is loose. Clean the pull rod of the brake linkage and lightly grease if required. Check the breakaway cable for completeness and damage.

Support wheel/support feet
Check the support wheel and the support feet for function and stability and lubricate the movable parts.

Lubrication
Lubricate the overrun hitch, if necessary the box bars, the support wheel, and, if required, the hinges of the drop sides and the frames. You should grease the coupling ball and apply oil to the relevant points.

Mounting bolts
Check tightness of all mounting bolts (refer to the table of torque settings in the operating manual). Pay particular attention to the bolted connections on the chassis. Immediately tighten any loose bolts. Replace any worn or rusty bolted connections. Have any loose riveted joints replaced by bolted connections where possible.

Lashing points, lashings
Check the lashing points (tie-down lugs, rings, brackets), lashing chains and ropes for damage and presence and replace them if necessary.

Winch
Oil the bearing bushing and the drum hub and grease the sprocket, the thread on the crank handle and the pulley.

Hydraulic system (pump, hoses, cylinders, connections)
Check the functionality of the hydraulic system, check for hydraulic fluid leaks and have the system repaired if necessary. Inspect the hydraulic hoses for cracks, ageing and wear. Clean and lubricate the connection points of the hydraulic cylinders.

Battery
Visually inspect for external damage or leaks of battery acid. Charge weak batteries and replace any defective or old batteries.

Cargo bed/loading bridge
Inspect the surface for damage / rust / oxidation.
Thorough cleaning and care of the cargo bed (where required) Treat the wooden floor with linseed oil / turpentine / wood stain (as required).

Bodies (e.g. drop sides, railing drop side extensions, H-frame, tarpaulin / frames, covers, etc.)
Inspect for damage, cracks, distortion of the tarpaulin frames.
Replace or repair defective or damaged parts. Check locks / hinges and grease if required. Check fixed superstructures for tightness and function.

After 10,000 km or every 6 months: Workshop maintenance

Take your Humbaur trailer to your Humbaur contractual partner every six months or 10,000 km or to another specialist workshop. Your operating manual lists all the necessary maintenance work. You can download the operating manual here.
